Canned Cocktail Review: Five Drinks Co Paloma

Posted by Jaime Fowler on

Five Drinks Co canned cocktail review of the Paloma by The Pursuit of Cocktails

Hi cocktail lovers! I'm back with another canned cocktail review and since it is officially October, I'm going with a Halloween theme. 👻   My friend E came over last weekend and brought a few ready-to-drink cocktails that she'd picked up at Total Wine. Amazingly - to both her and I's surprise - she picked all cocktails I hadn't seen before. How did that happen?!?! I must be slipping!

We decided we would try these kinda boring cans from Five Drinks Co first. This brand is a new addition to our local Total Wine and I'm glad she spotted it. You know I love pretty packaging so I'm not sure this one would have caught my interests - though I probably would have ended up trying it either way because honestly, I've tried *almost* every ready-to-drink cocktail, malt beverage and hard seltzer in that store at this point.

Going into trying this Paloma canned cocktail I wasn't sure what to think. The plain can doesn't really give you much to go on but I did notice that one of the ingredients is grapefruit soda which is a little different than a traditional Paloma. Traditionally Palomas have club soda or sparkling water so I was interested to try this twist.

Let's find out how it went.

Here is my official review of Five Drinks Co Paloma:

3 out of 5 cocktail shakers

This Paloma is much smoother and lighter than I expected. It does not pack that super tart grapefruit punch that a lot of Palomas do. The Five Drinks Co version is much more drinkable. It is lightly citrus-y, lightly grapefruit, lightly carbonated. It's just light - but not so light that it's like those tasteless seltzers. It is way better than that.

My friend E described this canned cocktail as "fresh and light" and that "it was perfect for drinking on the front porch." I agree with her. This is a pretty easy to drink cocktail on a night were you aren't looking to rage.

For me this cocktail wasn't that exciting simply because it is light. I know a lot of people love a light cocktail and I'd be willing to bet if that is you, then you'd probably like this one. Personally, I like a more flavorful cocktail. If I'm going to have  a cocktail I want it to be something special. Otherwise I'd rather save those calories for a dessert. Which is the discord that makes me so excited about the growing ready-to-drink cocktail market. As more and more canned cocktail lines join in we will all have more options. More light cocktails. More strong cocktails. More full flavor cocktails. More creative, wild, never-heard-of-before cocktails. There is plenty of room at this cocktail party for all tastes, flavors, and styles! (...quietly steps off soap box)

Sweetness

1 out of 5 cocktail shakers
One shaker = not sweet at all  // Five shakers = your teeth may curl

This is a Paloma so it is more tart than sweet. But the tartness of this Paloma isn't as over the top as others I've tried. I'm not exactly sure how they pulled that off, maybe it is the grapefruit soda. Either way, this is a very easy to drink, not too tart cocktail.

Booziness

3 out of 5 cocktail shakers
One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = Four Lokos

Officially this one rings in at 9% ABV which is more than a typical beer. I was a little surprised to read that after I had already been sipping on this cocktail for a bit. It does not seem like it would be that boozy which is always a good sign of quality made canned cocktail which earns this cocktail and this brand extra points in my book.

Would I buy this ready to drink cocktail again?

I am definitely interested in trying a few of the other Five Drinks Co canned cocktails. When I was looking at their website I noticed several of them have interesting takes on the traditional ingredients and that has piqued my interest. I may have to make a Total Wine run this weekend to see what other flavors I can get my hands on.

Here is the full list of the Five Drinks Co cocktails:

    • Moscow Mule - which has coconut water!!
    • Margarita - which has hibiscus and habanera agave nectar?!?! What? I need to try that!
    • Mojito - with passion fruit 😳
    • Gin & Tonic - I'm not a tonic fan so I'll skip this one
    • Watermelon Vodka Soda - with carbonated basil water?!?!
    • Paloma
